Bed and breakfast with a difference at Blea Tarn

Blea Tarn guest house has rightly been described as the jewel in the crown of Westmorland tourism. This is the spot from which visitors can enjoy the craggy splendour of Westmorland at its most rugged and Romantic. Guests often say that when they arrive at the pass and begin the final descent to Blea Tarn it feels as if they are traveling back in time, and almost expect to see the likes of Coleridge or Ruskin riding on horseback along the same road.
We have done our best to retain the charm of the past. Each of the four bedrooms contains period furniture and each has been painstakingly decorated to accentuate the rustic character of this eighteenth century inn. To this is added an unrivaled level of comfort, including underfloor heating, double glazing and luxurious private bathrooms with limitless piping hot water.
Breakfasts at Blea Tarn
Guests tell us that a Blea Tarn breakfast can sustain them through an entire day-long hike up one of the many rocky peaks that encircle the tarn. They also appreciate the lengths we go to to offer a genuine traditional Westmorland breakfast. Although we will strive to cater for any and every request (given a little warning), we do encourage guests to try some of the staple foods that both Coleridge and Ruskin would have enjoyed all those years ago. We have, for instance, our famous Blea Tarn oatmeal, served either with salt or local organic honey. The milk served is from our own Herdwick sheep, which are milked by hand by us every morning at sunrise (guests wishing to test their own milking skills are more than welcome to join us). For their mountain-top lunch boxes guests can help themselves to our delicious oatmeal biscuits. We are told that there is absolutely no comparison between the energy value of a Blea Tarn oatmeal biscuit and a plastic-wrapped museli bar.
